Does your child love to watch the baking competitions on the Food Network? We do to and we realize that there's a huge gap between the baking skills of even our great bakers and the skills we see on TV.

So here at  The Kids Cooking School, we like to go after big dreams so we decided to create our own regional baking championship series during the 2017-2018 school year. More to come on that front, but in the mean time, we are going to be teach our young chefs How To Bake Everything, from the world renowned Marc Bittner. 

In this class, students AND adults can learn the fundamentals of baking that are used in all of the baking competitions. Just like piano or soccer, when you develop a handful of basic skills, you are in a much better position to react to any surprises that are thrown at you.

Oh yeah, we will be doing that too as we move towards the end of the summer. Gotta love a good challenge!

Parents! Do you love to bake also? What better way to spend some quality time with your child than in a baking class. Please feel free to register right along with them. 

Teens are welcome in this class as well! Everyone older than 9 years old can bake with us this summer. 


Students will receive their own baking apron and will either eat - or bring home - their baked goods each week. As a bonus, all students will receive a lesson on how to enter a baked good in the Minnesota State Fair as well as more details about our kids baking competition coming up this fall. 

This will be an ongoing class. You can sign up for one class or multiple classes at a time. We are going to start out with a schedule from June 16 - July 28th. We will release the August schedule in early July and keep that pace of scheduling as we move forward. We will discuss the best day for fall classes as we get closer. I can't wrap my head around anything about "fall" when the flowers are still blooming! 

Baking Competition Skills

Over time, we will cover all of the following skills multiple times. I expect it will take many months to get through all of this, but each week we will pick something from one of the following categories before we close the class. We will bake the selected recipe the following class. 

  • 5 fundamentals of baking cakes to make them perfect EVERY time
  • Pies, Tarts, Cobblers and Crisps
  • Pastries
  • Frostings, Fillings, and Sauces
  • Cookies, Brownies, and Bars
  • Savory Baking
  • Cakes and Cupcakes
  • Quick Breads, Muffins, and Biscuits
  • Crackers and Flatbreads
  • Frozens, Puddings, and Candies

That pretty much covers every chapter in Marc Bittman's baking bible, How To Bake Everything. You can add one to your order and we will have it for you on the first day of class, or within two business days.
